Officer Entry options after PUC/Class 12
Selection of officers in the various Branches of the Indian Navy is through one of the following:
1. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) entries
2. Direct Entry Permanent Commission /Short Service Commission
1. UPSC Entry – After PUC/Class 12
Inductions under UPSC entry are held twice a year.
National Defence Academy and Naval Academy (NDA & NA) Exam
Candidates are required to apply online at www.upsconline.nic.in only. No other mode is allowed for submission of application. Eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admit Card three weeks before commencement of the examination. Candidates are advised to download their e-Admit Card for the Examination and take a printout. Exam centres in Karnataka – Bangalore and Dharwad.
Eligibility for Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy :
Education: Pass in PUC/ Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics.
Age: 16½ to 19 years.
Written exam is conducted by the UPSC followed by the SSB interview, medical test by Indian Navy and final preparation of merit list by UPSC. The advertisement for this entry is published in Jun/Dec.
2. Direct Entry Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission (DEPC/DESSC) – After PUC/Class 12

Commencement of Training – Jan and JulThe Navy B.Tech entry scheme is for male students who have passed their PUC/10+2 with minimum 70% aggregate marks in PCM and at least 50% marks in English (either in Class X or Class XII). Call to SSB interview will be based on JEE (Mains) rank. This is a 4 year course at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.
Min Height : 157cms. Age: 17-20 years
Sailor Positions in the Indian Navy after PUC/Class 12
There are two positions a) Artificer Apprentice b) Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR)
General Information applicable to both positions
Application – December/January and June/July of every year
Eligibility criteria –
a) 60% or more marks in aggregate in PUC/Class 12 with Maths & Physics and at least one of these subjects:- Chemistry/Biology/Computer Science.
b) Age should be between 17-20 years on the day of enrolment.
SELECTION CRITERIA –
Selection of recruits is based on the order of merit on their performance in Computer-based Examination, qualifying Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and fitness in Medical Examinations.
Computer-based Examination
- The question paper will be computer-based with a total of 100 objective type (multiple choice)questions
- The question paper will comprise of four sections i.e. English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.
- The standard of the question paper will be that of PUC/10+2 and the syllabus for the examination is available on the website

- Duration of examination will be one hour.
- The candidates are required to pass in all sections and in aggregate.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
- Qualifying in Physical Fitness Test is mandatory for selection.
- PFT will consist of 1.6 Km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squat ups (Uthak Baithak) and 10 Push-ups. Candidates undergoing PFT will do so at their own risk. Proficiency in sports, swimming and extra-curricular activities is desirable
Min Height – 157 cms. Visual standards are applicable
Enrolment will be subject to Fitness in Final Medical Examination at INS Chilka. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Chilka is the premier basic training establishment for sailors of the Indian Navy.
1. Artificer Apprentice (Technical branch) – Male candidates only
- Training – 09 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka, Odisha followed by followed by Professional training in the allotted trade at various Naval Training Establishments. Branch/ Trade will be allocated as per the requirement of Service.
2. Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR)
- Training – 22 weeks Basic Training at INS Chilka, Odisha followed by Professional training in the allotted trade in various Naval Training Establishments. Branch / Trade will be allocated as per the requirement of Service
Options after completion of degree
Candidates can also join the Indian Navy on completion of their degree. Selection to Officer Entry positions in the Navy is through Combined Defence Service exam, NCC entry (for B.E/B.Tech), Direct entry and University Entry scheme.
Women are granted Short Service Commission (SSC) in Naval Architect, Law, Logistics, ATC, Aviation (Observer) & Education Branches. The government has also given approval for Permanent Commission (PC) in Education, Law and Naval Architect branch on completion of SSC tenure depending upon merit and vacancy.
For all other Permanent Commission entries and Short Service Commission entries there is no written examination. These applications are short listed as per the criteria laid down by the Naval Headquarters, Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment.
The various branches of the Indian Navy are
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
Officers can exercise command of ships, submarines and aircraft. The other cadres that form part of the Executive Branch are – Law, Air Traffic Control, Naval Armament Inspection, Information Technology and Logistics.
ENGINEERING BRANCH
Modern ships, submarines and aircraft are fitted with advanced technology machinery and propulsion systems. As an Engineer Officer, you will be responsible for keeping all these Hi-tech systems serviceable. Opportunities exist to work in gigantic naval dockyards and indigenous production units.
You can also join in the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch. A Naval Architect is involved in design, construction, quality control, repair and new construction work of naval vessels.
ELECTRICAL BRANCH
A warship houses an integral power generation and distribution system. Complex missile systems, underwater weapons, radar and radio communication equipment form major part of a warship’s equipment. Electrical Officers have the responsibility of maintaining all this equipment.
Note: Officers of the Engineering and Electrical Branches can also volunteer for the Aviation/ Submarine Arm.
EDUCATION BRANCH
An Education Officer trains the naval officers/sailors. An Education Officer can specialise in almost all cadres of the Executive Branch. In addition some officers also get specialisation in Oceanography & Meteorology.
