Nature of Work
The main job of a restaurant manager is to ensure that day-to-day operations at the restaurant run smoothly and efficiently, and to provide customers with a pleasant dining experience that lives up to the restaurant’s brand standards as well as protects profitability. Restaurant managers take on the following responsibilities:
- recruiting and managing employees
- overseeing restaurant operations
- ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations
- managing inventory
- handling customer complaints
- reporting to owners / management
- generating financial and other reports
Essential Skills and Qualities
- Excellent communication
- Conflict management and resolution
- Positive attitude to drive day-to-day activities of the team
- Ability to work with and manage a heterogenous team, often from various different states of India needing adept language skills and cultural awareness
- Good organizational skills
Work Opportunities
Restaurant managers may work in standalone restaurants, large chains or resorts. They work with General Managers, wait staff, cooks and bartenders. They also have the following career options:
- Kitchen Manager
Oversees kitchen operations as the kitchen’s general manager, and is responsible for hiring, process management and optimization, inventory management, and so on, to ensure high client satisfaction. - Assistant Manager
Assists the General Manager in his duties – handle paperwork, manage training programs, brainstorming sessions and help in decision making. - Executive Chef
Assists in improving entire service and customizing cuisine to restaurant’s requirements. Also oversees entire cooking service from preparation to presentation.
Qualifying Path

There are national level entrance exams, state level exams, and university level. Some high-end hospitality chains also affiliate with a university to offer specific training and conduct their own entrance. The important exams include the NCHM JEE (National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Exam for entry to central institutes, some state level and a few private universities), AIMA UGAT BHM (All India Management Association Under-graduate Aptitude Test for BHM), CUET (Common University Entrance Test now accepted in many colleges and universities), the Maharashtra state common entrance (MAH HM CET), Army Institute of HM & CT Written Ability Test at Bangalore, Christ University entrance at Bangalore, etc.
