Nature of Work
Food and Beverage managers are responsible for forecasting, planning and controlling the ordering of food and beverages for a hospitality property. Their responsibilities include:
- budget management
- team leadership
- customer service, including processing customer complaints and planning alternative recipes
- menu design, including addressing dietary restrictions
- compliance with health and safety regulations and adherence to food, health and safety standards
- tracking and ordering shipments
- communicating and building strong relationships with vendors
- Planning resources, hiring, training, overseeing and managing staff

Work Opportunities
Food and Beverage Management graduates can work as Chefs, in Culinary Research, as Culinary Arts Instructor or F&B Manager, Hosts / Hostesses, Bartenders, Nutritionists, Food Service Managers, etc. Food and Beverage Management courses cover several aspects of food production like operations, finance, food production, food safety, guest services, housekeeping services etc. Hence, the scope of this qualification is vast.
Qualifying Path
The minimum education qualification to enter a Diploma in Food & Beverage Services program is to have completed 10+2 from a recognized examination board, either central or state. The program can be pursued along with graduation or after post-graduation as well. Admission to the course is done based on merit and through entrance examinations. There are national level entrance exams, state level exams, and university level. Some high-end hospitality chains also affiliate with a university to offer specific training and conduct their own entrance. The important exams include the NCHM JEE (National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Exam for entry to central institutes, some state level and a few private universities), AIMA UGAT BHM (All India Management Association Under-graduate Aptitude Test for BHM), CUET (Common University Entrance Test now accepted in many colleges and universities), the Maharashtra state common entrance (MAH HM CET), Army Institute of HM & CT Written Ability Test at Bangalore, Christ University entrance at Bangalore, etc.
