Nature of Work
Group B includes most of the executive layer – i.e., most of the supervisory work is done by Group C employees. This group includes gazetted (mostly administrative, those who can issue government stamps) and non-gazetted officers. Group B employees are mostly recruited by Staff Selection Commission but sometimes by UPSC or State PSCs. Group B employees include Sub-Inspectors, Inspectors, Junior Engineers, trained graduate / post-graduate School Teachers, Programmers, Technicians, Staff Nurses, Translators, JCOs, Technical Assistants, Physiotherapists, Accountants, Accounts Officers, Instructors, Section Officers, Counsellors, etc. This group is responsible for preparation and execution of most of the government actions.
Essential Skills and Qualities
Those in Group B need the skills appropriate to the roles they are performing – e.g., the skills required for an Inspector are different from those required by a school teacher or physiotherapist. They also need to possess administrative skills, leadership, communication, and team work abilities. They must have the ability to work with various cadres of government employees and the public.
Qualifying Path
Group B employees are mostly recruited by Staff Selection Commission but sometimes by UPSC or State PSCs.
SSC-CGL (Combined Graduate Level) is conducted for non-technical Group B & C posts which require minimum degree in any discipline.
SSC-JE (Junior Engineer) is conducted for Technical positions in government departments for B & C groups with Engineering degrees / diploma.
Above exams are conducted once every year based on vacancies in different government departments.
