ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Nature of Work

Chemical engineering is a multi-disciplinary branch of engineering that combines natural and experimental sciences (such as chemistry and physics), along with life sciences (such as biology, microbiology and biochemistry) plus mathematics and economics to design, develop, produce, transform, transport, operate and manage the industrial processes that turn raw materials into valuable products. Many of the processes within chemical engineering involve chemical reactions, and the field takes cues from chemists who are looking for new ways to create products and to investigate the mechanisms within chemical reactions. Chemical engineers then translate this chemical information to formulate designs.

Chemical engineers may therefore be involved in the areas of making chemicals and pharmaceuticals, Processing polymers and foodstuffs, Energy generation, Waste water treatment, Environmental clean-up etc.

Essential Skills and Qualities

An aptitude and interest in chemistry is highly essential for this cluster apart from mathematics and physics. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, team work, commercial awareness, good communication skills, impact on environment are required for a successful career in Chemical engineering field

Work Opportunities

A range of industrial sectors employ chemical engineers. Any company involved in large-scale conversion of raw materials into a product will require chemical engineers. Chemical production and process companies (for example, pharmaceutical, consumer goods, synthetics, plastics, paints and polymer manufacturers), water treatment industry, Food manufacturers, Oil refining/petrochemical companies typically employ chemical engineers. Many chemical development engineers work for engineering consultancy and contracting firms. There are also opportunities to work in pollution control, environmental protection, energy conservation, waste recovery and recycling, alternative energy, medical science and health and safety. Jobs such as Petroleum Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Energy Engineer, Environmental Engineer, Biotechnologist etc. exist in above mentioned industries.
