ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

Nature of Work

Aerospace Engineering is a branch of Engineering that provides skills and knowledge to design, manufacture and maintain spacecrafts, aircrafts, missiles and weapons systems. A large part of Aerospace Engineering consists of Mechanical Engineering covering a wide range of topics, including computer application, structures, mathematics, physics, drafting, electricity, robotics, aeronautics etc.

It is divided into two major and overlapping branches: Aeronautical engineering and Astronautical engineering. The former deals with aircraft that operate in Earth’s atmosphere, and the latter with spacecraft that operate outside it.

Essential Skills and Qualities

Aerospace Engineering is a highly specialised technical field that requires overall excellence in mathematical, calculative and observational skills. Resilience and persistence are highly essential if you opt to do research in this field. Creativity and innovativeness in product designing, Eye for detail, ability to work long hours and ability to lead and work in teams are important qualities one must develop to work in this field.

Work Opportunities

Aerospace Engineering is an ever evolving field, adopting new technology for further development in production and functioning of aircrafts and spacecrafts. Earlier the space was dominated by government organisations, but with the entry of many private players, opportunities in this industry are growing more and more. HAL, NAL, flying clubs, ISRO, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Defence services, Civil Aviation Department etc are the major employers of aeronautical engineers in India.
