Nature of Work
There are three major paths for JCOs and other ranks:
- Soldiers
The sub-categories are Soldier – General Duty, Soldier – Technical, Soldier – Clerk, Storekeeper Technical, Soldier – Nursing assistant, Soldier – Tradesman - Havildars
The sub-categories are Havildar Surveyor, Automated Cartographer, Havildar Army education corps - Junior Commissioned Officers
The sub-categories are JCO (Religious teacher), JCO (Catering) - Soldier Ranks – Other Ranks are Sepoy, Lance Naik, Naik, Havildar and Ranks of JCO are Naib Subedar, Subedar, and Subedar Major.
Essential Skills and Qualities
The essential skills and qualities include:
- Self-motivation and self-discipline
- High Physical and mental fitness
- Presence of mind
- Practicality and obedience
- Courage
- Patriotism, appreciation for the army way of life and work
- Capacity for hard work
- Technical skills for specific technical jobs
Qualifying Process
For all sub categories, recruitment is done on permanent commission. Qualification requirements for JCO and other ranks vary by sub category. Recruitment involves written exams, Physical, Medical, Visual Standards, Physical Fitness tests, Medical Examination in general. Upon selection, candidates go through elaborate, rigorous Training Program at Army training headquarters for a considerable duration before starting the job. For Most sub categories, only men are recruited Women are recruited only for selected sub categories. Now, more entry options are opening up for women candidates.
